Chapter Twenty: Journey To The Past

As soon as darkness covered the city the following night, Emmalina headed down towards the beach. It was a beautiful night for a stroll along the shoreline. The moon was full and the sky was covered in stars. When she walked down to the shore, Sebastian was waiting for her. He offered his arm as they walked in the sand. "I'd like to ask you some questions, if you don't mind?" she asked, anxious to get to know him.

"You may ask your questions but only ask them if you truly wish to know the answer."

"How old are you?"

"I was turned when I was 25 years old in the year 1328."

Holy shit! "You're almost 700 years old!"

"You seemed surprised. I am a vampire after all Emmalina. We are immortal." he said.

"It's just a little hard to wrap my mind around that. You've lived through so much."

"Indeed I have. I have seen many wars, the birth of technology, the change to this earth. Not all of it was for the better."

"Have you killed many people?"

"Yes, thousands upon thousands." he replied solemnly.

Emmalina took a step back from him, unsure what to do with this information. She should be running in the other direction screaming her head off but she stayed by his side. He sensed her uncertainly and grabbed her hand. "Do not fear me, Emmalina. It is different now. We no longer feed on humans. We are only allowed to survive on donated blood from hospitals and blood banks."

"Before blood banks were around, you drained humans. Why couldn't you just wipe their memory instead of draining them to death?"

"I was unsure when I would be able to feed again. It was different back then, most humans believed in the supernatural. Innocent people were burned alive because they were accused of witchcraft. People were staked for being thought to be vampires. It was madness everywhere you went. If one of us were caught feeding on a human there would have been an uproar which would have lead to much more blood shed. It might not have been the moral thing to do but it was the only choice we had. I told you not to ask questions if you do not want the answers."

"Fine. Did you ever turn anyone? I imagine if you had family you would have."

"I have never been a maker and I had no family left, most were killed in battle and my wife died the night I was turned."

"Your wife? You were married?" Emmalina asked.

"In my human life, yes."

"Did you have children?"

"No. My wife and I were unsuccessful during the little time we were together."

She sat down on the sand and he joined her, wrapping his arms around her. She couldn't deny the fact that she felt safe with him. Whether it was the bond or her real feelings she was unsure. They were both silent for a minute until she built up the courage to ask him, "Will you tell me about that night? The night you were turned?"

He didn't want to relive those memories again and he probably would never have told her if she wasn't his mate. But this was the woman he was supposed to spend eternity with. She had a right to know everything. "Very well." As he began to tell her his tale, it felt as though he was living it all over again....

Sebastian was down by the river watching the water ripple as the fish jumped out of the water. He watched the sun rise in the sky and smiled at the beauty this day had brought over the land. He started back towards the castle until he heard someone yelling his name. He rode towards the panicked voiced that rang out.

He rode into a clearing when he found the source of the yelling. As he took in his friend's appearance he asked, "John, what has happened?"

"The castle is under attack!"

Sebastian started to ride off towards the castle to defend the kingdom he was bound to serve. "No, if you try to fight you will die." John yelled.

"Then so be it. It is an honor to die for my king."

"The king is dead! We owe no more loyalty here. We must leave while we can, now!"

"I will not leave Annabelle." he yelled at John.

"Sebastian she was at the castle. There is no hope that she survived."

"No. I will not leave without her."

He took off on his horse towards the castle. When he got close enough he could hear the battle cries all around him. He rode as quietly as he could down to the river and into a secret entrance of the wall that surrounded the castle. He circled back to where the ladies in waiting should have been. "Annabelle!" he shouted, desperately trying to listen for a response.

He shouted her name again with no response. His fear that he'd lost her was overwhelming. "Sebastian!" Annabelle screamed as she came running out. He rode over to her so thankful to see she was unharmed.

To be certain he asked, "Are you hurt?"

"No, I am fine. A guard helped me hide, I would not be alive if it was not for him."

"We can thank him later, we have to go." He said as he offered his hand to pull her up on his horse.

"Do not bother, he is already dead." she said with sadness in her voice as she sat behind him. She wrapped her arms around him and they took off.

He stopped at their home and they both quickly went inside. "What are we doing here? I thought we had to leave?" she asked.

"It will be days before we reach the next kingdom. We need supplies and food or we might as well stay here and die."

She shook her head and he realized how terrified she was. He walked over to her and put his arms around her. "Annabelle we will be fine, I swear to it."

She closed her eyes and leaned into him. "Sebastian, I have never felt such fear. You cannot imagine what was done to the others. They..." she broke down in tears. He held her tighter, knowing exactly what was done to them. He thanked God that his Annabelle had not been one of those unfortunate women that suffered such a horrible fate.

He gently let her go and took off his helmet. "We must hurry, Annabelle. There will be more coming. I need to you gather as much food as you can. Can you do that?" he asked.

She wiped the tears from her face. "Yes. I.."

He heard the hooves of at least five horses outside. He grabbed her and put his finger to her lips to keep her quiet. The horses stopped in front of there home. Tears started to stream down her face again. "Shhhhh" he said gently as she buried her head in his chest. It felt as hours had passed before they finally moved on. When he was sure they were gone he said, "Quickly Annabelle! They may start searching the houses soon." Annabelle rushed and grabbed as much bread and meat as she could hold and started packing them away. Sebastian grabbed his sword, a few knives and a few sets of clothes. He looked out the window as darkness fell. It would be easier to stay hidden now that it was night.

He walked outside, staying hidden in the shadows. The streets were empty but he could still hear screams coming from the castle. He ran back inside to Annabelle. "Have you finished? Now is our best chance to leave."

"Yes, I have packed food for at least six days. Do you think that will be enough?"

"It will have to be." He grabbed what she had packed and led her around back to the stables. As he finished strapping their supplies to the two horses, he helped Annabelle mount her horse and then mounted his own. Relief swelled in him as they reach the edge of the kingdom.

As they were heading into the forest, there was a man standing on the side of the road. Sebastian wielded his sword and pointed it at the man. "I do not wish for trouble, we are just passing through." The man laughed and came closer to them. Sebastian jumped off his horse and charged the man. The man grabbed Sebastian and threw him against a tree. He heard his spine snap and fell to the ground. He tried with all his might but he couldn't even move a finger.

"Sebastian!" Annabelle yelled and she tried to run to him but the man was so fast Sebastian barely saw him move. The man grabbed Annabelle and sank his teeth into her neck. Annabelle screamed and fought but she was no match for him and soon her screams stopped altogether.

Sebastian barely registered what just happened. He couldn't move or speak. All he knew was that he failed to keep her safe and this man wasn't a man at all. No! She cannot be dead! He watched as he dropped Annabelle to the ground as if she were spoiled fruit and stalked over to him. I swear Demon, some how I will slay you for this! He screamed in his mind.

The demon laughed again. "Is that so, knight? From where I stand it looks as though you will be doing no slaying ever again." The demon crouched down to him and Sebastian could smell his wife's blood on him. "You are brave and strong for a human. Though you are now damaged." The demon looked to be contemplating something, he seemed to make up his mind after a few minutes and grabbed Sebastian. He sank his fangs into his neck and soon Sebastian lost consciousness.

"Sometime after that I awoke in the ground as I am today, a vampire." Sebastian said as he brought his mind back to the present.

Emmalina stood and Sebastian followed. She had tears in her eyes and wrapped her arms around him. "I'm so sorry."

"It is in my past, Emmalina. Do not pity me."

"Did you at least kill the vampire who did this?"

"I did. It took me decades to track him down. He was older than me but I had a lot of rage for what he had done." Sebastian looked into the lightening sky. "It will be dawn in less than fifteen minutes."

Emmalina didn't want to leave him, not like this. Not after that story of horror and heartbreak. "When will I see you again?" she asked.

"Come to my home tomorrow night. Do you remember where it is?"

"Yes, I think I can find it. Are you sure you are okay to be alone?"

He smiled and smoothed her hair back behind her ear. "Emmalina I am touched by your kindness but I have come to terms with this many centuries ago."

She smiled back at him. "Alright. I will see you tonight" She bent up and softly kissed his cheek. He felt something stir inside him as her lips brushed his face. He ignored it as he took her hand and they walked back to the street. They went their separate ways as they both headed home.

NOTES:

How did everyone like the flashbacks? I did not even try to speak in old English because I would have failed miserably so let's just pretend they spoke like that. Lol. The world I used for those shots was the Wizarding World of Harry Potter found here. It was the only world I could find that had a medieval feel to it. As always, thanks for reading. =]

Chapter Nineteen: Take A Chance

As soon as Emmalina came into the house her father was there to give her a hug. She hugged him back, although her thoughts were still on the sexy vampire she'd just left.

Donovan broke their hug to say, "Emmalina I know you're an adult but you need to call us if you're not coming home. Especially with everything you know, it's dangerous out there. We aren't trying to treat you like a kid, we just worry."

"I know that. But I do feel like I'm being treated like a child. I can take care of myself, I'll be fine." Well, I'm fine because of a certain vampire but he doesn't need to know that. God, he'd lock me in my room forever if he knew what happened tonight. "I'm pretty tired, I think I'm going to go ahead and go to sleep."

"Alright." Donovan sighed. "I'm just glad you're safe. Good night."

"Night."

Emmalina walked into her room and stripped off her clothes. She went to the dresser to grab her nightgown but stopped when she looked in the mirror. What the hell am I supposed to do? From everything I know about vampire mates, I know this isn't going away. He won't just disappear. I don't think I want him to anyways. Is that because of the bond? Or is it because I'm attractive to him on my own terms. I'm so confused. She grabbed her nightgown and slipped it over her head. She got into bed and starred at the ceiling. When she finally drifted off to sleep, the dreams of him returned. Only this time they were intensified and every nerve ending in her body was firing off with desire.

When she woke up the next morning, she felt exhausted. Her dreams were so vivid that she felt like she barely slept. She took a shower and put on her clothes. She walked into the kitchen to pour her a bowl of cereal. Her parents were already at work and wouldn't be home until after dark. After she ate she started thinking about the night before again, trying to figure out everything. I wish I had someone I could talk to about this. Bianca could help me but do I really want to take the chance of her telling my mother. Would she do that? Do I really have a choice? She sighed when she realized there was no other option. She didn't have Bianca's number and she couldn't ask her mother for it so she figured she would go to Plasma 501 and hope she showed up.

As darkness fell over the city, Emmalina dressed and headed to Plasma 501. She walked up to the bar and saw Bianca sitting at a table, alone. Thank God, I guess it's my lucky night. She walked over to Bianca, a little unsure how to start. She didn't know her very well but she had to find out what all of this meant for her.

"I know why you're here." Bianca said as she stood up and walked over to her. "I knew you were with Sebastian last night. I smelled your scent mixed in with his when we came across the dead rogue."

"How do you know him and why did you lie about that to my parents?

"He's an old friend of my mate, Beau. I've meet him several times these past few years. He's a good man. I lied to your parents because one, that would freak out that you were so close to a rouge and two they would freak out even more if they knew you were with another vampire. I love your mother, I really do, but she will never understand this. You father, well I hate to say it but he will never accept this."

"What am I supposed to do? I have....urges that I can't really control."

"That's the bond. I can't help you with your parents, hopefully time will make them come around but I can help you with Sebastian. Why don't you get to know him first before you worry about the bond?"

"Because I'm scared the only reason why I'll like him is because of the bond. How can I tell the difference between what I really feel and what's being influenced by it?"

"The bond won't make you fall in love with him, Emmalina. It just makes it easier to fall."

"I think I need a drink." Emmalina says as she walks over to the bar. Bianca follows her and sits down to order a drink for herself. The bartender hands the drinks over, not taking her eyes off of Bianca for a second.

"You won't tell my parents about any of this will you? I have enough to handle right now."

"God no. I don't want to even imagine what would happen if Donovan found out about this."

"Well, I'll have to tell them eventually, won't I?"

"Yeah, but later is better." Bianca smiled to herself, then looked at Emmalina and smiled again.

"What is it?"

"My mate is here."

"How do you know that?"

"Because I can feel him and I know he's not alone."

"He's here too, isn't he?"

"Yeah, he's actually been here the entire time you've been here. They're talking right now. I suppose it won't be long before one of them comes up."

Emmalina wasn't sure how she felt about that.

Downstairs, Sebastian and Beau are discussing the previous night. "Bianca told me about the rogue. Your mate's fear was still present. You were lucky my friend."

"I know. I cannot go through that again."

"How are things working out so far with her?"

"As the humans would say, I am losing my shit."

Beau laughs, "Indeed, I bet you are. It will get easier. When she accepts what she is to you."

"She is upstairs now with your mate. I suppose I should be happy that she is trying to find out information. At least she seems interested."

"She is up there now? Well, I suppose I should go introduce myself."

"Wait..I do not know.." But Beau was already half way up the stairs, ignoring him.

"Hello darling." Beau says as he reaches the second floor and sees his mate. "This must be Emmalina. I am Beau, it is a pleasure to finally meet you."

"Yes, this is her. She came to ask me a few questions."

"I'm unsure about all of this." Emmalina said as she starred at the floor. She was a little nervous about having two very lethal vampires around her.

"You have nothing to fear. We would never harm you in any way." Beau said. "Sebastian is my friend and to harm you...well it would kill him."

"Eventually I will grow old and die. What is he to do then?" She asked.

Beau and Bianca shared a worried look with one another. "I am sure he would not last long after your passing." Beau said. "He would go mad, or simply meet the sun."

"That's horrible."

"It is what it is." he said solemnly. "But you do not have to let it come to that."

"Beau." Bianca warned, shaking her head.

"Emmalina I think Sebastian is waiting for you, if you would like to speak with him." Beau said changing the subject.

"You'll be fine Emmalina, just get to know him."

"Alright. What do I have to lose?" Emmalina said. As she was about to walk away she noticed that she was no longer the center of attention. She watched Bianca and Beau become almost enthralled with each other. There was so much passion and love, she couldn't help me want it herself. Maybe this is my chance? She thought as she headed down the stairs.

As Emmalina walked down the stairs she saw him immediately. As soon as their eyes met, her body lit up like a roman candle. God, he's even more gorgeous than he was last night. How is that even possible?

She walked over to him and sat beside him on the couch. Her palms were sweaty and her stomach was in knots. "Why are you nervous? Is it because of what I am?" he asked.

"No, not because you're a vampire." It's because of how I feel when I'm with you. Like I want to strip off our clothes and...

"Then why?" He asked, interrupting her thoughts.

"I don't really have a lot of experience with this type of thing." she said reluctantly.

"Nor have I. This is new to me, it feels.....different."

"That's not what I meant." Emmalina said, embarrassed.

Sebastian's eyebrows rose up as he realized what she was trying to say. She is innocent. Good, less people for me to kill.

He couldn't stand it anymore, he had to touch her. He slid over and put his arm around her. She instinctively leaned into him. "I'd like to take this slow." she said. Not really, but I have to. I need to know what's real.

"That is a reasonable request." Fuck. This woman is going to be the death of me.

He leaned down to her lips, trying to test the boundaries she apparently set. He stopped right before their lips touched to let her decide if this was too fast. He needed some kind of contact with her or he was going to lose it. His vampire instincts were screaming at him to take what was his and he didn't know how much longer he could fight them.

He almost sighed when she moved in and closed the gap between their lips. Her lips were soft and sweet. He breathed her in. She smelled like a rain storm on a warm, sunny day. When he slipped his tongue into her mouth the entire world was forgotten. He's fangs shot out and almost nicked her bottom lip.

She pulled back in surprise and gasped. "I apologize, I cannot always control them." He said.

"I've been told, I was just surprised." She said as she starred at them. They were sharp, like little daggers in his mouth.

"You are not afraid?" He asked, surprised by her courage.

"Should I be?"

"No. I could never harm you."

"For some unexplainable reason, I believe you. Why is that? Is it part of the bond?"

"Yes, but it is also true."

"I don't know anything about you. You don't know anything about me."

"I know plenty about you. I've been following you for years."

"What!?"

"Only to make sure you were safe and when you were out in the city, never in your home."

"You never snuck in while I showering or sleeping did you?" She asked, mortified by the idea.

"No, of course not."

"Well I still know nothing about you, that's hardly fair."

Sebastian looked out the window and noticed the sky was started to lighten. "It will be dawn soon. Would you like to meet me tonight?"

"Here?"

"No, somewhere more quit and less crowded. Would the beach be acceptable for you? No one is there at night."

"I guess so."

"Shall I pick you up?"

"NO!" she exclaimed. "I'll just meet you there okay?"

He nodded his head and assumed it was because of her parents. Which was fine with him, less drama he had to deal with. He looked out the window again. He had minutes to get home, which was clear across town.

"I must go. I will see you tonight." He kissed her one last time and quickly walked to the elevator. When he was sure no humans were around to see him, he ran home as fast as he could. He had several minutes to spare as he opened the door and walked in to lay down on his bed.

Emmalina snuck into her room, hoping her parents were asleep. She called them and told them she would be late but not this late. She laid down in bed, anxiously waiting for her date with Sebastian that night.

Chapter Eighteen: Patience Is A Virtue

A couple of nights later Emmalina was finishing up a case in an unfamiliar part of the city. She saw this funky little club and decided to go in for a celebratory drink for closing the case. She walked in to the brightly colored club and sat down at the bar. She ordered a glass of red wine and began sipping her drink. As she looked around she noticed hardly anyone was here but she soon found out why. "Hey baby, I get off at two o'clock if you want to join me back at my place." the bartender said with a grin.

"Uh, no thank you." she politely told him.

"Ahh come on, I'll show you a good time."

"I'm not interested." she said a little more firmly.

"I can't wait to get you out of those clothes, you know you want this." the bartender said as he grabbed his crotch.

You've got to be fucking kidding me! She stood up, threw her money at the bartender and walked out.

She headed down a dark ally, trying to find the subway so she could get back home. What a creep! She thought as she walked. Unbelievable! Does he think he's God's gift to women or something? Eck! She continued down the ally and was about to pass a dumpster when a rouge jumped out from behind it. Emmalina's heart stopped a few beats as she realized what was in front of her. She started backing up slowly but her high heel caught in her dress and she fell backwards, slamming her head on the concrete, knocking her unconscious.

Sebastian had been looking for his mate all over the city since night had fell. When he caught her scent mingled with the scent of fear he ran as fast as he could to get to her. When he finally found her there was a rogue leaning over her. Sebastian heard her heart beating and thanked the fates that he made it in time. When the rogue saw him, he stood up a little and Sebastian prepared for a fight.

The rogue was strong and fast but Sebastian was the one protecting his mate. That alone fueled him enough as the two wrestled on the ground. Sebastian grabbed his knife out of his coat pocket as he tried to ram it in the rogue's heart. The rogue fought back but Sebastian was enraged at this vampire who would have taken his mate's life if he hadn't been here in time to stop him. The rogue grabbed Sebastian's hand that held the knife but it was no use. Sebastian rammed the knife into his heart and twisted it. He watched as the body started to decay to it's natural age and slide over to Emmalina, kicking the bones out of the way.

He lifted her upper body gently and let it rest against him. He put his hand on her cheek and titled it towards him to he could access the damage. A small concussion but nothing life threatening. If I had been only a few minutes later... He doesn't even want to think about what would have happened. He picks her up and heads to his home where he knows she'll be safe.

When he gets home he walks back to his bedroom and lays her gently on the bed. My mate is finally in my bed. She is unconscious but I will take what I can get at this point. He walks back to the door but stops before he gets there and turns back around to look at her again. I've waited centuries for her and whether she likes it or not, I am not waiting any longer. He stills when he realizes she is starting to wake up.

Emmalina gradually comes to but doesn't open her eyes. Mmmmm silk sheets. Wait, I don't have silk sheets. What the... She starts to remember what happened before she blacked out and her eyes fly open. The first thing she notices is that this is definitely not her room and then she sees the vampire standing at the foot of the bed. She screams and scrambles across the side of the bed to get as far away from him as she possibly can. Sebastian walks slowly over to her and Emmalina drops to the floor and starts throwing her fists out in front of her. He bends down and lightly catches her arms so she doesn't hurt herself if she actually makes contact with him. "Please don't eat me." she sobs. "I don't want to die."

My God! She thinks I want to eat her! What have her parents been telling her? He helps her to her feet and she tries yet again to hit him. He grabs her hand and pins it against the wall so she can't hurt herself. "Emmalina would you please stop that. You are going to break your hand if you keep trying to hit me." he says as he leans in to her.

She stares at him as recognition hits her. The silver eyed vampire from Plasma 501. She also realizes that he is really close, too close. It's making her body feel things that her mind thinks is insane. "Why am I here?" she says.

"You were unconscious when I found you. I brought you here so you could recover safely."

"What happened to the other one?"

"I killed him."

"You saved me.....why?"

Sebastian wasn't sure if this was exactly the right time to tell her she was his mate so instead he said, "You were in trouble. Do you think me such an evil person that I would not help someone who was about to have their throat ripped out?" He winced on the inside because that's exactly what would have happened if he hadn't made it there in time. He backed off to give her some space since she was starting to calm down a little or either she was in shock, he wasn't sure which one.

Emmalina grabbed her throat to see if she could feel any wounds. Nothing, there isn't a scratch on me. He saved my life. I'm...I'm not sure what to do now. This is the man that's been haunting my dreams ever since I first saw him. Now that he's in front of me, I don't know what to do. Should I thank him? That seems kind of lame but...it's all I've got. She looks at him again, still memorized by the glowing silver eyes. "Thank you...for saving me and everything."

"You are welcome."

"I guess I should say I'm sorry for trying to hit you. You can't blame me, I know what you are."

"Does that bother you?" he says as he inches closer to her. He can't help it, his waited to be this close to her for awhile now.

"I....I don't know yet but I know I don't like the crazy ones." She shivered as she remember the rogue standing in front of her, blood all over his face.

"Listen, I am leaving the room. When you think you are ready to speak to me, come into the living room." He said and walked out the door. He couldn't stand it anymore. He was too close to her, too close to his bed. He had to get out of there before he did something stupid. Dammit! She is not ready for this but I can only be so patient. This is not how it was supposed to go. I was supposed to make her fall in love not snatch her up off the street. She can not leave yet, not until I explain who she is to me. When he got into the living room he started a fire in the fireplace and starred into the fire trying to figure out what the hell to do. As the sun rose high in the sky he started getting weaker and weaker and he cursed again.

Emmalina paced back and forth across the room. There are no windows in here so I can't escape. I'm confused at the fact that I don't even want to escape. What the hell is wrong with me and why did I want him to touch me again. Where ever his hands were it felt like my skin was on fire! I've never felt that way before but..I don't even know him, plus he's a vampire. My father would kill him! Oh shit....my father. If he finds out about this... first he will probably lock me in my room and never let me come out again then he will hunt this vampire down and kill him. I...I don't want that to happen. No, he can never know and neither can Mom. She looks at the door. I want to know more about him. I feel like I've known him and EVERY part of him for years thanks to my vivid dreams but I know nothing about him. Well, no time like the present. She walked towards the door, opens it and walks out the room to search for the vampire.

She saw him in front of a huge stone fireplace. She watched him as he stoked the fire. "Are you calm now?" He asked.

"For the most part."

"Good." He put the fire poker up and rushed to stand in front of her.

"WHOA!" She said as he came up to her so fast.

"What? You have never seen us move?"

"Not like that! If I wasn't paying attention I might not have seen you."

"Have you not met many vampires?" He said with confusion. He was sure her parents would make her train or something when she found out about them. And the only way to really learn how to fight one is to train with one.

"No, not really. My Mom's friend just recently turned into one but it's not like she was moving like that around me. The only other time I saw one was at a funeral and a boy in my class. And of course.....you." She starred in his eyes when she said the last word. Dear God, I'm insane. But he's so incredible irresistible! I just want to....OH MY GOD! I forgot they could read minds! "Oh, I'm so sorry. This is embarrassing!"

"What is embarrassing?"

"What I just thought! It's not what you think...I..." She watched him as he tilted his head to the side as a confused look washed over his face. "Well, didn't you....can't you read minds?"

"Yes."

"Then you heard what I just thought didn't you?"

He looked down not sure what to say. I really want to know what she is thinking. I am not use to not knowing. What could she be thinking that she could be embarrassed about? He looked over to the clock on the wall. "It is almost noon. I need to rest for the day. I request that you stay here until I get up. Will you do that for me Emmalina?" He said as he steps closer to her.

"Yes." She said before she even realized she'd spoken.

"I will awake when night falls." He left her there and headed to his bedroom. He felt so weak from the sun being up. He could hardly stand. He threw off all of his clothes and climbed into bed, hoping she would be there when he woke up.

She walked into the living room trying to figure out what just happened. Why the hell did I say yes? Why would I want to stay here with that man. Okay, so he's sexy but still, a lot of guys are just as sexy somewhere...probably...maybe. UGH! She looks down at the coffee table and see a bloody broken sword. Oh well that's just lovely. What a wonderful decorative item a bloody sword makes! Her stomach starts to growl so she walks into the kitchen and opens the refrigerator. Ewwww! There are stacks of bags of blood on all the shelves. She closes the door and looks in the cabinets. Nothing! Not even an old box of cereal or crackers. It's all empty.

After she's finished rummaging through the very empty cabinets, she takes out her cell phone and turns it on and waits for it to load. Oh Fuck! Twenty missed calls and eighteen voice mails! Oh this is bad. I need to get some kind of story straight before I call them back. When she has her story straight she dials her father's number and waits for him to answer. It only takes a total of three seconds for that to happen. "Emmalina, where the HELL are you!? Do you know how worried we have been! We've been looking all over the city for you! Where are you?" Donovan yells into the phone.

"I'm sorry! I was working late and just decided to crash at Shanta's house. I was tired and wasn't thinking. I just woke up, my phone was on silent. I'm really sorry!"

"I'm on my way."

"What? NO! I've already left. I'm working on a case right now. I'm fine, I'll be home sometime tonight."

"Fine, but don't put your phone on silent anymore. We thought something had happened. Your Mother was hysterical. Me, her and Bianca was up almost all night looking for you. When we found a skeleton of a vampire we didn't know what to think. But Bianca said your scent was no where near it. "

Well, she must have lied. I can't imagine there are skeletons all over the city. Why would she do that? "Dad, I'm fine. There isn't a scratch on me!"

"Do you want me to pick you up after work?"

"No, I can find my own way home."

"Alright then. When you are finished just come straight home okay. I want to look at you for myself."

Emmalina shook her head. Why is he so paranoid? Then again....if it wasn't for silver eyed man I wouldn't be here. Hmmm, I really need to find out what his name is.

"Emmalina are you there?"

"Yes, sorry! I got distracted. I'll be home later. Love you."

"I love you too. Be careful."

"I will, bye."

After hanging up, Emmalina walked back into the living room. There was a computer but it was password protected and she didn't know what the password was. So she walked over to the bookshelf and scanned some of the books. He has great taste in books. Holy shit! They're all first editions too! She grabbed a book and sat down on the couch, very carefully turning the pages as she read.

Emmalina read for hours until she heard some shuffling coming from the vampire's room. She quickly but the book back where she got it and sat back on the couch. She watched as the vampire walked out of his room and up to her. Holy.......damn! Someone help this man before I jump him. Good Lord!

He sat down beside her on the couch. They sat in silence for awhile. Dear God, if this man doesn't put some clothes on, I may find myself taking off the little bit that he does have on....with my teeth. "Could you go, er, put some clothes on?"

"I already did." he said as he gestured to his boxers.

Oh sweet Jesus, the man was naked only a few feet away from me! What the hell is happening to me? I've never been this aroused before. "Well, could you put some more on?"

He sighed. After living for centuries, modesty goes out the window when you've seen everything and done everything. He goes back into his room to throw on some clothes.

He sat back down on the couch and asked, "Is this better?"

Nope, not at all.
"Yes, thank you." Ahh, shit did you just hear that?

Sebastian just sat there starring, not a clue in the world. "Why are you not reading my mind? I thought you said you could?" She asked out of curiosity. If I could read everyone's mind, I would all the time, just to know what they are thinking. Maybe my thoughts bore him? Maybe he thinks I'm just a silly little girl.

"I didn't say I could read yours." I guess it is now or never. She deserves to know the truth and I can not take it anymore.

"What does that mean? You can't read my thoughts?"

"No I can not." He said as he looks at her.

"Why not? Is there something wrong with my mind?"

"No, I can not read your mind because, I am not suppose to."

"What kind of reason is that!? There's something you're not telling me. Come on vampire, spit it out."

"Sebastian, I prefer to be called by my name."

"Well I didn't know it until two seconds ago. I'll call you by your name for now on."

"Now on? Do you plan to see me again?" He said.

"Well, I was just saying. In case we run in to one another again. You didn't answer my question. What are you not telling me?"

He took a deep breath, out of habit not necessity. "I can not read your mind because you are my eternal mate. Do you know what that means?"

Oh no! No, no, no, no, no! This can not be happening. What was it that Mom said when she was talking about vampire mates. Magically bond. No wonder I've been some kind of sex freak around him. It's this weird freaky vampire thingy!

"Emmalina? Did you hear what I said?"

"Uh huh."

"Are we going to talk about it?"

"I....I'm sorry I have to go." She jumped off the couch and ran out the door as fast as she could. Sebastian let her get some distance before he followed her to make sure she made it home safely. Part of him wanted to grab her and take her back home but the biggest part of him, the man who he once was knew he had to give her some space or she'd hate him forever. She needed to process this. But he would see her again...soon. He'd make sure of that.

Chapter Seventeen: Let's Go Hunting

It's finally Emmalina's birthday! She and her old friend Shanta are having a great time dancing. Mason and his girlfriend have been inseparable ever since he aged into a teen.

As Amelia watches the teens dance and laugh, she wonders if Bianca will show up. Amelia has been thinking for weeks about what she said. When Bianca walks in the door, Amelia goes over to her and pulls her into the living room, away from everyone else. "Bianca, I'm glad you came. I was worried you wouldn't accept the invitation. I've been thinking about what you said. I'm sorry about how I reacted but you can't blame me. We were at Romeo's funeral got God's sake!"

"I know that and I'm sorry I waited until then to tell you. Truth is I was being a coward about facing you and Romeo. Then when he died, I had no choice. I would have hated myself if I did not go to his funeral."

"I understand. I had no right to question your decision. This is your life, you have every right to live it how ever you choose. I just wish you would have came to me first."

"If I did what would you have said? Honestly Amelia."

"I would have told you not to go through with it."

"Why? Because you hate vampires. It wouldn't have mattered to you if I'd fallen in love and wanted to spend the rest of my life with this man. You wouldn't have taken that into consideration at all."

Amelia looks down in shame, knowing her friend is right. "I wouldn't have cared if you loved him or not. I'm sorry, I'll try to work on all pf this. I'm not saying I'll end up loving them but I might be able to be in the same room with them without going crazy. Well, except for Vlad." They both laugh. "Speaking of Vlad, have you talked to him lately? Is the team still together or...?"

"Yes, he called me two nights ago. I think he is avoiding all of us. Romeo's death reminded him of mortality, something he does not have. I think he is surprised that he felt kinda sad." Bianca looks at Amelia with a little sadness of her own, realizing that she'll outlive her for hundreds, maybe even thousands of years. "Anyways" she continues pushing those thoughts aside, "The team is still together. Whenever he needs us, he'll call."

"Alright. We'll be ready."

"I'm glad you changed your mind. You're the only friend I have left. With work and the team, none of us really have time for other people. We are all we have besides family. I missed you."

Amelia grabs Bianca and hugs her tight. "I missed you too." she says, happy to have her friend back. Amelia let's her go and asks, "You're not going to read my mind all the time now are you?"

Bianca laughs. "No, definitely not! Not sure I could keep you as a friend if I did that. Especially with how you feel about vampires. But you'll come around, it won't happen overnight."

"I'm glad you understand that. With you it will be easier because to me you're still same old Bianca."

"I am the same, Amelia. When I turned it didn't change who I am. Did you think I changed as a person?"

"Well, yeah. All the other vampires are all grumpy and mean."

"I think that has more to do with their age and loneliness. When they find their mates they'll be more pleasant to be around."

"What's that like? Having a mate?" Amelia asks curiously.

"When I was human or now?"

"Both."

"When I was human it was no where near as strong as it is now but there was still something there. Something I couldn't explain. I was actually out hunting when I saw him, his back was turned to me and at first I thought he was a rogue so I grabbed a throwing knife and aimed for his heart. He must have heard me because one second he was two hundred yards away and the next he was right in front of me. He just starred about me with this surprised look on his face. I almost stabbed him out of pure fear but I couldn't. I didn't want him to die for some reason. When he said, "Finally, it is you." I knew what he meant. I didn't want to accept it at first, especially with what I do. But I had this almost pull towards him. I couldn't stop thinking or dreaming about him. Finally, I couldn't stand it anymore, he was following me everywhere and I couldn't have him follow me on a hunt with the team. So I told him we would try things out if he would quit following me. He said he would but I don't think he ever did. Actually he is maybe...a block a way now, still making sure I'm okay."

"How do you know that?"

"I can feel him. When I turned, everything multiplied by a thousand. Sounds, smells, feelings. It took some time to get use to everything, especially my thirst." Bianca shuddered inwardly. "I came very close to drinking from some poor guy one night. I couldn't help it, he smelled really good."

"Okay, that's enough of that."

"Sorry, but anyways, you know how we always use the term soul mates?"

"Yeah?"

"That's what it's like. It's like someone specially designed him for me and me for him, we connect as one. It's hard to explain unless you feel it."

"Hey guys! I'm ready to blow out these candles!" Emmalina shouts from the kitchen.

"I guess we better go over there, we will have to talk some more later." Amelia says.

"I'd like that." Bianca says as she smiles.

Amelia waited until everyone gathered around her before she blew out the candles. Everyone clapped and cheered her on as she took a breath in and blew it out at the flames.

Emmalina was so excited about finally being an adult and couldn't believe she was graduating tomorrow. As everyone finished their slice of cake, one by one they started leaving. Emmalina went to sleep early that night in anticipation of the next morning's events. She wanted to be there early to make sure her speech was ready. She'd been named the class Valedictorian and it was customary to give a speech. She was nervous about speaking in front of everyone and hoped everything went as planned.

She was late. She rushed through her shower, quickly put on her dress and graduation robes and rushed down to the town hall where the ceremony was being held. She sat down on the stage and waited for their chosen public speaker to call her name to give her Valedictorian speech. Everyone clapped when she was finished and she sat back down until her named was called to receive her diploma. After she got her diploma she and the rest of her class threw their caps into the air and cheered.

After it was over her and her family exited the building. They took a lot of pictures between chats with friends and classmates.

Amelia wiped her eyes and gave her daughter a hug. "Mom are you crying?"

"Only because I'm so proud of you."

"Thank you, Mom."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

Next it was Donovan's turn. He sighed as he brought her in for a hug. "This has come all too fast. I remember when I was teaching you how to walk and now you're graduating."

"I can't stay a little girl forever, Dad."

"Sorry, but you'll always be my little girl. I'm proud of the woman you've become. I know you will go off and do great things in this world."

Emmalina was the one to tear up a little this time. She and her Dad had always had a special bond that she didn't share with her Mother. She wiped her eyes quickly before they pulled apart. "Are you hungry? I thought about taking everyone out to eat before we head home." He said, changing the subject. He wasn't ready to let her go and he'd try to hold on to her as long as he could.

"Yeah, I didn't have time for breakfast."

Emmalina takes off her robes and they go to a fancy restaurant to celebrate. They talk, laugh and just enjoy each others company. None of them are sure if they will be able to do this much anymore. Mason will be graduating soon too. Donovan worries about his kids everyday and hopes they will be safe out in the world. He knows he can't keep them with him forever but he wishes he had a little bit longer. After they finish eating and pay the bill, they all head home to go to sleep after a long, exciting, emotional day.

The next morning, Emmalina wastes no time trying to figure out what she wants to do with the rest of her life. She goes downstairs to grab the paper and walks back up to sit on the couch. She opens it up and starts to scan it. Cosmetologist? Nope. Paranormal Researcher? Definitely not. She flips to another page, hoping to find something she likes. Interior Decorator? No, I'm not that artsy. Private Investigator? Hmmm.. that sounds interesting. Let's see.... She reads through the advertisement and notices it says to call the local police station if anyone is interested. She grabs her cell phone and looks in her contacts for her Mother's work phone number and dials. She chats with the receptionist who tells her to come down to the station for the necessary paperwork.

She waves for a cab and heads to the station. She does all of the paperwork and they give her a uniform. She feels much better about this decision and she's sure she'll love snooping around, she did when she was spying on her parents. She smiles to herself as she remembers going through closets, computers and listening in on phone conversations. Those times were much more simpler. She thinks as she makes her way back home.

A week later, Mason's birthday has arrived. He blows out his candles, ready to put high school in his past so he can look forward to his future.

After Mason blows out his candles he grabs a slice of cake. He's nervous about a certain conversation he wants to have with his Mother but waits until everyone leaves before he and Dawn approach her.

After everyone has left he and Dawn walk over to talk to Amelia. "Mom, there isn't an easy way to say this but Dawn and I have decided to move in together."

"So soon?"

"Yes, I love her. I have for a long time. I don't see any point in waiting."

"Mrs. Burkhart, I love your son very much. I'd like to spend the rest of my life with him."

Amelia smiles at the young couple. She was once young too and understands that love waits for no one. "If this is what you both want then you have my blessing."

"What are you blessing?" Donovan asks as he walks into the living room.

"Mason and Dawn want to move in together."

He looks at his son and perhaps maybe his future daughter in law. "Are you both sure about this? This is a serious step." Time's up, I guess.

"We are. We've already been to look at apartments. We found the perfect one and it's not too far from here so we'll still be close by."

Donovan is relieved to know that. "When do you move out?"

"We were hoping we could spend the night in our new place...tonight." Mason looks at them a little guilty.

Amelia and Donovan look at each other. They were expecting this but not this soon. But they can't stop their children from having lives of their own. "Do you need any help moving or packing?" Donovan asks.

"No, I can handle it."

"Alright then. We're glad you have both found each other and you're so sure of this decision. If you need us don't hesitate to call." Amelia says with tears in her eyes.

"We will. I love you guys." Mason says as they all hug and kiss each other. Mason and Dawn leave his parents to go pack up his clothes.

"I think I need a drink." Amelia says out loud and heads over to the bar. Before she can take even a sip, her phone goes off. She looks at the caller ID but doesn't recognize the number. "Hello?" she asks.

"Time to go hunting. I have gotten word of two rouges. Meet us at 77th street, where they are doing construction." Vlad says and hangs up on her.

"Well alright then. Thanks, bye!" Amelia says to the dead line and rolls her eyes. "Donovan! We've gotta go." She yells as she heads into her room for a change of clothes, her weapons and the bottle of pills.

They meet up to the address Vlad gave them and search around the construction site. At first that don't find anything but as they turn a corner, what they find makes Amelia almost want to hurl. One rogue is feeding off a poor women like he's at a buffet. The other one has blood all over his face and it's caked in his hair. Apparently he's already had his fill off of her. As soon as the rogues see them, one prepares for a fight while the bloody one flees at an amazing speed even she's surprised by.

Vlad goes in for the kill. This rogue is at least two centuries younger than him and he doesn't stand a chance. He pins the rogue down and brings the knife down right into his heart, twisting the knife several times until the rogue's heart is shredded and there's nothing left but a pile of old bones.

Donovan runs after the other rogue while Bianca covers him. Amelia rushes over to the woman to see if she's still alive. Vlad takes a few steps into the same direction the rouge went and takes in a breath to smell the air. "He is long gone. We will not be finding him tonight." Vlad glances back at Amelia. "You are wasting your time, she is dead."

Amelia is angry that he doesn't even seem to care, he just assumed. "How do you know? You haven't even looked at her!"

He walks over to Amelia. "She has no heartbeat, Amelia. She is dead."

She looks down at the woman again. I'm sorry we couldn't save you. I'm sorry you had to die such a horrible death. I'll do everything I can to find the other bastard that did this to you.

"No you will not. The other one was older, a lot older. You will be like this woman if you go after him alone, even with your super pills." Vlad says as he listens to her thoughts.

Amelia gets up and walks over to him as Donovan and Bianca join them with no luck of finding the other rogue.

Will you find the other one? She thinks at him.

"Yes, but not for you or this woman. But because he is a rogue and must be terminated as our law states."

"Fine, whatever. I don't care why you do it, just get it done okay?"

"We are done for the night. The sun will rise in less than an hour and Bianca and I need to take cover. Can you two handle the bodies? I do not have time and workers will be here soon. They cannot find a dead woman and a skeleton that is at least four hundred years old." Vlad said.

"Yeah, we'll take care of it." Donovan said and with that, Vlad was gone.

"He's right, I need to go home as well."

"Bianca, do you know what the other rogue smells like?" Amelia asked.

"No. I'm still new at this. I smell a hundred different things but I can't separate what they are yet. It's a bit overwhelming.....especially what ever is in that trash can over there. " Bianca says as she twists her face into a look of disgust.

Amelia laughs, "Okay, Well I guess we will see you later. You better hurry home."

Bianca looks in the sky where the sun is threatening to rise on the horizon. "Shit. Bye!"

Donovan and Amelia stand there for a few minutes watching the sun rise. I hope she makes it home in time. "What are you going to do with the bodies?" Amelia asks.

"Burn them."

"What!? You can't burn her Donovan she has a family that will be worried about her!"

"I don't like it anymore than you do but we don't have a choice. Look at her body Amelia, it's covered in teeth marks."

"Can't we just say it was an animal attack or something?"

"Have you ever heard of a mountain lion in the city? Because I haven't and that's the only thing that would remotely resemble this kind of damage. I'm sorry Amelia but we have to burn her. They will probably identify the body with dental records or something."

"Fine. Let's just get this over with." Amelia says not at all happy about what they have to do. Donovan grabs some turpentine left over at the site and drenches both bodies with it. He reaches in his pocket for a lighter and lights the liquid on fire. Donovan and Amelia watch as it ignites and flames engulf the bodies. After most of the flesh is burned off the woman, he outs it and leaves her there to be found by the construction workers. He quickly digs a hole where cement is being poured sometime soon and drags the smoldering skeleton of the rogue and dumps it into the hole and covers it back up.

"Alright, that's it. Let's go before the workers get here." Donovan says as he grabs her hand and they run back to their apartment.
